Morocco's Coastline

Morocco boasts of an amazing coastline stretching over 1200 miles providing some amazing sites and beautiful beaches.

In the last blog, we talked about Morocco's Coast and shared some insights about the coastal city of Essaouira. Another major coastal city is Tangier located in northern Morocco about 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) from Spain offering an interesting mix of North African, Portuguese, French and Spanish.

This trading port and city has been Morocco's gateway to Africa for centuries ruled by different cultures such as the Phoenicians, Romans and Byzantine Empire. The city used to be an international zone and during this time it became a hub for western intellectuals and writers such as Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs in the 50s and 60s.

Tangier has an interesting history, amazing sites and beautiful unspoiled sandy beaches. Even though it has been modernized lately in order to promote high end tourism, it still preserves its many historical and cultural sights worth exploring. Tangier is known for its old Kasbah, Beach Promenade, St Andrew’s Church, American Legation which is the only national monument outside the United States of America and Librairie Des Colonnes. However, one of the must see sights when visiting Tangier is Hercules Caves which is located in Cape Spartel.

Take a stroll in the old Medina and experience the local cuisine while taking in some breathtaking views of the Strait of Gibraltar and Southern Spain.
